Ongoing Projects

1.

Documentation of the Temples of Kumaon Region

The Department of History of Art conducted a two days resource planning from 3rd to 4th August, 2019 to document the temples of Kumaon region which included Katarmal Surya Temple, Jageshwar Dham and Baijnath Temple, Uttrakhand.

NMI signs MOU with the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture for a research project entitled Cham Sculptures from Vietnam and it’s Interface with the Indian Art.

The project proposes to prepare and publish a research catalogue of 50 sculptures from the collection of Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture. The project will focus specifically on the development of Cham sculptures and its interface with the artistic tradition of India. The aim is to highlight the historic cross relations between India and Vietnam in the domain of art for a better understanding of the shared history of the two countries. The methodology would focus on the identification and iconography of the sculptures.

The Department is also working on the Ragamala Project based on the Gem Palace collection. The aim of the project is to study the history of Indian music and antiquity of the raga forms along with the literary and philosophical traditions of Mewar. The project also proposes to investigate the relationship between music and ragamala paintings with regards to iconography of almost 100 individual ragas and raginis. 
   
 

Completed Projects

Two Intangible Cultural heritage Projects on the Festival of Salhesh, Bihar and Art of Kollam, Tamil Nadu have been prepared for the Ministry of Culture to be sent to UNESCO as dossiers. The projects were based on  extensive research which culminated in documentaries and short films.

The project on Art and Architecture of Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan was completed in the year 2010.

The Project on Digitization of Slides of the NMI Slide Library was completed by the department in 2008. A total of 67,000 slides were digitized and inventories were prepared.
