The Department offers full time Postgraduate and Research Programmes in History of Art, Short Term Courses on Art Appreciation. In addition to theory classes, gallery talks, site visits, workshops, seminars and symposiums form a core part of the course structure.

  M.A. in History of Art:

Covers a wide range of subjects in Indian, Asian and European art.


The History of Art Department offers excellent research prospects for students willing to enroll in the Ph.D. program. Applicants are expected to work on topics which will help broaden the research base of the department through original contribution of knowledge. Applicants are advised to either opt for an unexplored area of research or to enrich a known area of research through fresh analysis. After enrollment, Ph.D. scholars are given a thorough grounding in research methodology and encouraged to embark on field studies concerning their area of research.

  Short-term Courses:

At the National Museum Institute we conduct courses for the general public to acquaint them with the essentials of Indian art history. The faculty members of the History of Art Department are joined by guest speakers including curators, academicians and professionals, to give lectures and gallery talks. Topics covered include the landmarks of Indian art history from antiquity to the present.  In one of the courses, modules on some aspects of western art as well as Far Eastern Art are also included. The Institute runs these courses for public benefit and aims at creating awareness about the cultural heritage among the masses.
