National Museum Institute of History of Art, Conservation and Museology (NMI) is a Deemed to be University under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.
The Institute offers regular M.A. and Ph.D. programmes in the disciplines of History of Art, Conservation and Museology. The Institute also offers two Certificate Courses of five months’ duration to create awareness about the rich cultural heritage of the country among public.
This Institute is under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, as an autonomous body and Hon’ble Minister of Culture is the Chancellor of NMI.
This is the only University in the country which is housed in a museum, enabling its students and faculty access to a vast repository of cultural resources.
Focusing on establishing knowledge networks within the country as well as across the globe, the mandate of NMI is to foster national and international collaborations for promoting research and training in the fields of History of Art, Conservation and Museology. In 27 years of its existence, the Institute has collaborated with more than 30 countries for seminars, exhibitions, workshops, conferences and symposiums.
Research is one of the core activities of NMI. Since its inception, as an academic institution, a wide range of inter-disciplinary research has been produced and, hence, provides a vibrant platform for exchange of ideas in the field of its specialisations.
In order to foster academic excellence and promote world class education, the Institute has made concerted efforts to meet national and global standards of education. To this effect, the Institute has signed MoUs with universities in UK, Austria, Germany, Poland, Thailand and China for regular faculty and student exchange and enrichment programmes.
